Cloud Computing and its common resources quickly found its limits with the appearance of Covid-19.
It was not a few hundred thousand employees who started teleworking but several millions worldwide.
As a result, the infrastructures and networks of operators and companies have been put to the test. Impossible to connect to the cloud, impossible to send and receive messages. The most powerful servers are one after the other being put to the test.
Added to this is the closure of schools, with the urgent creation of online courses, which are struggling to function properly due to a lack of anticipation and unsuitable infrastructure.
At Microsoft, the “Teams” service was indicated as a victim of “degradation” while the platform was out of service requiring to switch to Google HangOut.
However, faced with this influx of connections, operators are trying to anticipate increases in traffic by not ruling out limiting access to Netflix and YouTube in favour of teleworking.
However, the availability of certain platforms such as Canal +, PornHub or web conferencing services, which are free for a limited period of time, may not help to reduce traffic.
Online gaming platforms experience many connection problems and bugs such as Fortnite on Tuesday 17th evening.
Despite the problems caused by this crisis, some see opportunities such as Slack and Zoom and of course the giants like Microsoft and Google who are making tools available for free during the crisis and who will not fail to charge the services when everything returns to normal.
Currently the US government is in discussions with Google, Facebook, and other technology companies about the possible use of personal data to fight the epidemic. This would involve collecting location data from Americans’ smartphones and using it anonymously to map the spread of the disease and predict future urgent medical needs.
Apple and Google are expected to “build a tracking tool into the phones’ operating systems that users can choose to enable anonymously to find out if they have been in the presence of identified cases.
This would allow people to quarantine and monitor themselves for symptoms.
There is no doubt that in the longer term, such a system would better contain other large-scale epidemics.
As an anecdote, some clever people have rushed into the small world of domain names. On 6 March, for example, Coronaprotection-France.fr was registered.
On 11 March, Coronavirussymptomes.fr, Corvir.fr and Corona-live.fr were registered. Some more optimistic bought Coronavirus-soigner.fr (registered on March 6), Coronamedication.fr, and the much-awaited Corona-vaccine.fr and Coronavaccines.fr… So many solutions to come but unavailable for the moment.
Last but not least, let’s note the brand new domain Coronaviruslefilm.fr. No doubt the anticipation of a disaster movie.
